Tenafly — Mark Hyman, founder of Global Care Unlimited (GCU), a nonprofit educational and humanitarian organization, announced that it has raised enough money to build a 12-classroom school in Awassa, Ethiopia.
Through fundraisers like Tenafly Middle School’s "Gebzha" festival, the Demarest Middle School carnival and the Greco-African End of the Year Dinner Party, GCU has raised $60,000 to ensure the construction of the Ethio-American Friendship School: A Global Care Institution by the end of the summer.

As a result of the construction, nearly 400 children will have the opportunity to attend school at elementary, middle or secondary levels.
Hyman said he hopes to build a personal connection between the Ethiopian students and the GCU students through pen pal and e-pal correspondence. He also plans to explore ways to potentially fund additional classrooms in Awassa.
GCU has partnered with Yohannes Gebregeorgis, the founder of the Ethio-American Friendship School and the nonprofit organization aimed at creating a culture of reading, "Ethiopia Reads." Gebregeorgis is set to visit in November to share his views on the impact of the collective efforts of GCU on the children of Ethiopia.
