Tenafly — For its 10th anniversary, the Tenafly Educational Foundation (TEF) 5K Run and ROLO Dog Walk set new records by raising $35,000 and having more than 1,400 runners participate in the event.
The TEF is a non-profit organization established in 1984 to fund educational programs not covered by the school budget. The money from events like the 5K goes to TEF and from there it goes toward grants, said Mark Aronson, a race director.
Aronson said TEF has raised more than $300,000 in the past 10 years and hopes to continue the trend of surpassing its expectations each year.
"Each year, we feel like it’s going to be hard to pass the previous year, but we do," he said.
The money is raised through corporate sponsors and the fee to enter the race. This year, the pre-registration entry fee for adults was $15 and $20 on the day of the event.
Aronson said the fee covers the cost of the race’s expenses and the rest of the money comes in through corporate sponsorship, which is key to raising more money each year.
"We had higher sponsorship from the corporations and more people run in the race," he said. "We’ve surpassed everything."
