Four years well spent

Tenafly — The salutatorian of Tenafly High School’s Class of 2008 knows all about time management and working with others.

Dennis Zeveloff will head north to attend Dartmouth College in the fall. Zeveloff applied for early admission, and he was accepted in December.

Although he’s not positive what he will major in, he’s leaning toward economics with minors in Spanish and politics.

Zeveloff’s current roster includes four Advanced Placement (AP) classes: Spanish, biology, literature and calculus. He’s also taking a TV/video elective, foreign policy, honors marching band and a peer leadership course.

Peer leadership is something Zeveloff has a lot of experience in. For the past four years, he has been class president, a member of the varsity swim team and in the marching band. He has also participated in the school play and was captain of the swim team this year.

Along with his role as class president, he is also part of the principal’s cabinet and superintendent’s council.

Zeveloff said his extracurricular activities helped him land a spot at Darthmouth.

"I think that getting involved in a lot of activities that deal with a lot of people, not just going home and studying every day definitely helped that," he said. "Doing things I’m interested in probably helped too."

He said what really set him apart was giving tours of the Statue of Liberty last summer. He was looking for a summer internship and stumbled across a Web site that had volunteer activities he was interested in.

"I started off working at the library at Ellis Island and then just talking to the national park rangers…I was able to get a job doing interpretations which is what they called giving tours of the statue."

He drove to Jersey City during the week and hopped a boat to the island, which he said was "pretty cool."

Zeveloff expects his final grade point average to be in the 4.3 area.

Zeveloff said he admires his role model, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, for always giving back to the community.

"He’s someone that I look up to or at least try to be like."
