No. 84 bus to pick up some of 14’s routes

According to David Gee, general manager of Rockland Coaches, the Red and Tan bus No. 14 line is being consolidated with the No. 84 bus, affecting some of the routes servicing Closter.

The service of the No. 14 bus, which runs from the George Washington Bridge terminal to Harrington Park with stops along Knickerbocker Road, is stopping May 19.

Riders whose destination is the GW terminal will instead have to pick up the No. 84 bus, which stops in downtown Closter.

The 84 bus that stops in downtown Closter will take over some of the No. 14 scheduled routes beginning May 19.

However the No. 14 route will still service Port Authority passengers during morning and afternoon rush hours from approximately 5:45 to 8:45 a.m. and 4:20 to 8 p.m.

"We are trying to economize, save money and save fuel," said Gee. "This is a bus that’s redundant because through most of the areas there is a parallel service or similar service."

Due to rising fuel costs and decreasing ridership along route 14, said Gee, it was more cost effective to have the 84 take over.

"We would have had to raise fares about a dollar a person to compensate for fuel and the healthcare cost to drivers. It wasn’t paying off for us," he said.

He added there have been no complaints so far and all riders should easily be accommodated by the new plans.

People picked up on the Knickerbocker route by the No. 14 bus can easily catch the 84, said Gee. "If they go up north by the Exxon station [on Knickerbocker Road] they can catch the bus there."
