It’s the ideal place for family fun, a comfortable sociable setting and this summer marks the 50th year of its existence.
The Demarest Swim Club opens its gates Memorial Day weekend for this historic season. After a long winter, members have been waiting in anticipation.
"I look forward to the opening and I think the whole town does," said seven-year member Richard Gordon. "You get to see friends you haven’t seen in four or five months."
The camaraderie is just one of the intangibles the pool provides, which keeps members coming back every year and also appeals to newcomers. It’s not only Demarest residents that make the club a special place, but out-of-towners also feel part of the aquatic family.
"It’s family oriented and a good mix of age groups," said former president and long time member Domenic DiFrancesco. "There’s also a good blend of members from other towns and even New York.
"I’ve been to a dozen pools and what makes this one special is a combination of the people, shady and sunny areas and the three pools."
For physical features, the club boasts a picturesque exterior and even a newly constructed snack stand. There are two sizeable pools (T and L shaped), a pool designated for children, picnic areas complete with tables, a volleyball court, dressing rooms with showers and even grassy play areas for activities.
"The club is nestled in the woods and it makes you feel totally separate from everything," said Gordon. "People constantly tell us that this is one of the most beautiful pools in Bergen County."
The club offers programs for beginners learning to swim. There are also options for competitive swimmers or members that want to get involved with a swim and diving team. The club encourages members to voice their suggestions and aims to please, which is one principle that has kept it going.
"There’s great pride amongst the members in addition to the successful management that has kept the club going," said DiFrancesco. "The legacy of the pool, set 50 years ago, has attracted members and newcomers. The biggest change has been in the demographics and the growth of membership.
"What can I say? I love it and I’m sure everyone’s looking forward to the opening."
The swim club looks to host various events throughout the season and hopes to celebrate the 50th year on a date set in July. Regular pool hours are Saturday, Sunday and Monday, noon to 8 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Pool membership for Demarest residents is $595 and sponsored out-of-town membership is $700.
