Tenafly hammered Holy Angels 10-0 in opening round play of the Bergen County Softball Tournament.
The Tigers pounded out 11 hits, including back-to-back triples by seniors Amy Pfund and Jules Barrett in the second inning.
"The girls surprised me," said Tenafly coach Megan Williams. "Some days we do have power. Some days it’s all about location. The pitches were in there and the kids knew they had to execute. There was no waiting. They were strikes. We had to go for them today."
"She was a good pitcher and we just hit," said senior Megan Birch of Angels pitcher Krissi Gorsuch. "Everyone hit and executed when they needed to. It was a great game."
A one-out walk to Barrett, infield out and single by Birch gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Tenafly added three more in the second thanks to a ground ball that went through the legs of the second baseman.
After the Angels recorded the second out of the inning, junior Casey Flores singled and Pfund and Barrett pounded triples to boost the lead to 4-0.
"That’s what I like about our [batting] order," said Williams. "We really just say to the girls every day, ‘Who is going to step it up for us?’ There is flexibility in our order."
Gorsuch continued to battle but she didn’t get a lot of help from the defense.
"They hit the ball but a lot of the balls that they hit were playable," said Angels coach Sue Liddy. "Through the legs, over the head. There is not much you can say.
"This was one of those bizarre games."
The Angels had a chance to get back into the game in the top of the third. Tenafly pitcher Jessie Shevins struck out the first two batters but Bianca Bossbaly poked a shot just over the head of shortstop Birch and Nina Bruno stroked the ball just out of the reach of second baseman Marisa Silber.
Then Danielle Cuglietto walked to load the bases.
Shevins induced Liz Best to ground the ball toward Birch and Bruno, running from second, ran into Birch and was declared out for interference, which ended the inning.
"When she started the game I thought Jessie looked fantastic," said Williams. "She even had a little extra on her ball today."
"She is a really good pitcher," said Flores. "She’s very quick and never loses confidence."
The Angels never really threatened to score again as Shevins held them hitless for the rest of the game. She finished with five strikeouts.
"She is phenomenal," said Birch. "We count on her so much and she always comes through."
Tenafly added four more in the third.
Birch led off with a single and Michelle Koles’ bouncer to second erased Birch. Silber reached on an infield single and Ana Brown singled to center, driving in Koles. Then Flores blasted a triple to left, scoring Silber and Brown. Flores scored on a single by Barrett.
"I am usually a bunter and I just started to hit," said Flores. "And it’s working."
Flores, who bats ninth in the lineup, had a single, double, triple and three RBIs in the game.
"Everybody in our order," said Williams, "has the ability to have power, has some speed and it’s really just a matter deciding what we are going to do."
Cara Rothernberg led off the fifth with a single to right and reached third on Flores’ double. Barrett skied to center, Rothenberg scored and the game ended, thanks to the mercy rule.
"This second half of the season has been different because of our offense," said Williams. "The kids are comfortable at bat and I think they are getting confidence in themselves. And more importantly they are doing it and executing with people on base, which is key."
"Last year was kind of a building year and we did better than we expected," said Birch. "This year we came out, losing only two players from graduation, and we are really executing, hitting and we are loving it."
