The Tigers slid, stole and swung their way to a 12-4 win over Cliffside Park April 21.
Despite the win, coach Megan Williams feels that the team needs to make adjustments and increase the intensity of its game in order to continue winning.
"We’ve had a lot of wins, which is great, but we never forget that so many of these wins were one-run games," she said. "Every game, we have to earn…we have to perform more offensively and we’re going to keep working on playing clean softball."
As of April 21, the Tigers are ranked No. 7 by The Record with a record of 10-1.
In the bottom of the first senior Megan Birch smacked a triple, knocking in two, as the Tigers took a quick 3-0 lead.
Catcher Brigette Cohan belted a double in the bottom of the second to take a 5-0 lead.
The win was a team effort of swift stealing and solid defense that the Tigers on top during the game.
Williams said it was a frustrating day because the team has been working really hard during practice and its efforts didn’t shine through to the game.
"Today brought out some weaknesses that we have to work on," she said. "It hurts as a coach and as a player when you see things break down that you work on again and again."
Pitcher Allie Bowden agreed with Williams that the team could have played better.
"We got the win but there were a few things that went wrong with our team that we could’ve stepped up a little," she said.
Among those things were mental errors and communication.
Bowden, now 2-0, feels she could have pitched better by keeping the ball lower and throwing more strikes.
In the bottom of the fourth, senior Amy Pfund pounded a single, driving in two runs and she later stole home, for an 8-3 lead.
Bowden and junior Portland Small helped the team in the final two innings.
Bowden and Portland had back to back singles in the bottom of the fifth. Portland’s hit brought in two runs. The two each had an RBI in the bottom of the sixth, earning the Tigers their 11th and 12th runs.
Williams said the team needs to perform more offensively and continue to improve its game.
"Today wasn’t the way we wanted it to go," she said. "If we play clean softball, we can play with the best."
