A lawyer from Tenafly was jailed this morning after police received an anonymous tip that he was storing guns and ammunition in an Englewood storage facility.
Gerald Taufield, 36, of Trefalgar Road was arrested at about 9 a.m. by detectives as he drove away from his stately home.
Police said Taufield is responsible for 54 unloaded guns, 1,000 rounds of hollow-point bullets and "assorted artwork," local and federal investigators found in an Englewood storage facility April 16, said Detective Capt. Steven Sabo.
Police would not reveal the name of that storage facility this afternoon.
Two of the seized guns, a handgun and a rifle, were stolen out of New York City and Colorado, Sabo said.
According to related news reports, the artwork depicted Nazi insignia.
Police said they also found slow burning fuses from the Civil War era and some of the guns seized were from the same time period.
An anonymous tip led police to the weapons about two weeks ago, after a caller told authorities a large amount of guns and possible explosives were being stored in the unnamed facility.
Englewood and Bergen County detectives, U.S. Marshals and federal investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives found an assortment in one storage unit – 21 handguns, 21 shotguns, two assault rifles, bullets, the fuses and the artwork.
Police said Taufield’s intention for the weapons and ammunition remains under investigation.
Sabo said police didn’t know how long Taufield had been storing the material at the facility.
Police don’t have any additional suspects and believe Taufield acted alone in storing the weapons.
Taufield was charged with unlawful possession of assault firearms, handguns, shotguns, rifles and hollow point bullets. He was also charged with receiving stolen property.
Englewood police released Taufield after he posted $140,000 cash bail.
A woman who answered the door at Taufield’s residence this afternoon declined to comment.
