High School student Liza Sobel plans to send another 50 donated instruments to a New Orleans high school in May. But she needs money to pay for shipping.
The 17-year-old started a New Orleans instrument drive last fall to support a music program at Algiers Technology Academy in New Orleans.
Combined with the first January shipment, Sobel has collected more than 100 musical instruments and accessories.
Donations benefit the new charter school, which opened August 2007 in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
According to Algiers Technology Academy history teacher Adam Brumer, the school had only a piano before Sobel created the donation program.
"In the wake of Hurricane Katrina and as the city of New Orleans continues to rebuild, the resources needed to fund music programs have not been the highest priority," wrote Brumer in a January e-mail.
Sobel said that thanks to donations, the high school has enough instruments to sustain a music program. Her next mission would be to extend the donation program to other New Orleans schools in need.
