Incumbent Thomas Corbett announced his resignation last night from the school board race.
Corbett said to a shocked “Meet the candidates night” audience that he was unsure whether he could commit to another three years on the school board, if re-elected to a second term.
The longtime Cresskill resident of 35 years is no stranger to the community.
His resume for school board candidate boasted 15 years on the Council and two years of Planning Board experience. Having raised five children in Northern Valley, Corbett also served 18 years as a football and basketball coach.
It is unknown what reasons Corbett had for resigning 13 days prior to the April 15 election.
Corbett could not be reached for comment.
Although Corbett’s name will still appear on the ballot, his resignation eliminates competition between the candidates. District Superintendent Charles Khoury said that a notice of withdrawal would have to be received 44 days before the election in order to remove the name from the ballot.
Candidates John Park, Denise Villani and incumbent Ronit Arginteanue will likely fill the three school board vacancies.
The superintendent then said that despite the resignation, it is still important to vote in favor or against the school budget on April 15.
“Even when there’s no [contention], we’re still hoping to get the vote out,” he said.
