The Tenafly Fire Department quelled a morning structure fire at a Depeyster Avenue house on Jan 10.
Tenafly Police Capt. Dan Regino said the smoke alarm alerted the Fire Department to the fire, and when police and fire showed up, smoke was already coming out of the windows and chimneys of the house.
The fire had started in the basement and traveled up a laundry chute to the first and second floors of the single-family house, according to Fire Chief Richard Philpott.
"It was accidental, but we haven’t pinpointed an exact cause," the chief said.
The homeowner was able to rescue the family dog from the house while firefighters were present, according to Regino. There were no injuries in the incident. But during the course of the fire department’s battle with the blaze, the house sustained significant smoke and fire damage. Philpott said the fire was brought under control within an hour.
"There was a lot of damage, but we stopped it before it spread too far," Philpott said.
Englewood, Dumont and Cresskill provided mutual aid assistance at the fire.
