Old Tappan — Borough officials and the public school district are working together to save taxpayers’ money.
Councilman Ron Binaghi met with Superintendent William Ward and Business Administrator Doug Barrett to discuss the "resource optimization initiative." This initiative would have the municipality and school board sharing services.
Examples of such cooperation may include Department of Public Works plows clearing snow from the district grounds or the school’s meeting space being used for town functions, Binaghi said.
Ward said the Police Department recently used school facilities to conduct training while school was out of session. He said more ideas would be forthcoming but said there is the possibility of senior citizens benefiting from computer skills classes offered at the school.
"We have fairly up to date computer labs here and it would be an opportunity to help out with things [the town] wants to do," Ward said.
"With everybody working together with an open mind we can benefit the people in the community," he said.
Ward supports cooperation between the school board and the council and is hopeful the effort will yield "more direct savings" in the future.
Periodic meetings between the Borough Administrator, Ward, Barrett and Binaghi will take place, Ward said, hoping for a meeting to be held every six weeks.
Binaghi said there will be "more to come," referring to the initiative.
