Husband and wife printmakers Richard Pantell and Karen Whitman will display their prints and etchings at the Belskie Museum in Closter until March 2.

Curator Anita Duquette called it a "fun exhibition," saying Pantell and Whitman depict varying viewpoints of the New York City’s five boroughs.

"Karen is more whimsical and fun and Rick’s work is more historical and romantic," Duquette said.

Pantell works primarily in etchings and his subjects range from architectural panoramas to more personal expressions of landscapes from rooftops. Whitman specializes in linoleum block prints depicting city landscapes and ordinary people often in a humorous, light-hearted way.

The exhibit also offers the audience an insight into the printmaking process, which entails the etching out and layering of various colored pieces of paper on both modern and antique presses.

"It affords people an opportunity to understand how prints are made. They are printed with progressive proofs with how each color was laid down in a print. And it has all the tools a print maker would use," Duquette said.

Pantell studied at University of Bridgeport, Conn. and The Art Students League and teaches printmaking at the Art Student’s League. His prints are in the collection of Butler Institute of American Art; the Museum of the City of N.Y.; The British Museum, London among others.

Whitman studied printmaking at State University of N.Y. at Buffalo, The Art Students League and Parsons School of Design, New York City. Her work is in the collection of Portland Art Museum; The British Museum, London, Zimmerli Art Museum, to name a few.

The Belskie Museum, located at 280 High St., has hours Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. or by appointment by calling 201-768-0286.
