Holy Angels successfully followed its game plan and forced Pascack Valley to make adjustments.

Although the outcome wasnt in the halos favor, coach Sue Liddy was proud of the miraculous effort.

"Our biggest fear was matching up with Rebecca Lynch," said Liddy. "Our post players did a magnificent job and if they were going to beat us, we wanted it to be from outside shooting."

The Angels contained Lynch, holding her to only 12 points, but it was the outside shooting and stellar performance of Indian Sara Ely that made the difference. Ely racked up 29 points to push Pascack Valley past the Holy Angels, 68-44.

"I thought we played hard, but they just shot lights out," said Liddy. "They’re well coached and they hit outside shots."

Krissi Gorsuch, who was coming off an injury, made key contributions and her defensive performance was a huge reason why Lynch was pinned down in the opening quarters.

"It was different playing someone that’s not a primarily a post player," said Gorsuch. "I was able to keep up with her, but she does really well shooting outside."

It looked positive for the Angels early on, as point guard Cara Bonito laid up two baskets for the early 4-3 lead. On the other side of the court the interior defense collapsed perfectly to take away the Indians’ inside attacks.

After the two layups, the Angels shots rimmed out. Kasheema Besley and Kaley deNicola hoisted up two shots that went in-and-out.

Pascack Valley took advantage of the missed baskets and orchestrated a 10-0 run, which lasted four minutes. It also helped that the Indians were able to generate second chances on the strength of four first quarter offensive rebounds.

By the end of the first eight minutes the Angels trailed 15-6. Between quarters Liddy stressed the importance of boxing out and limiting the Indians shooting opportunities.

Fresh off the bench, Jackie Jerkovich ignited the offense, using her patented high arcing shot to open the second quarter with a three-pointer. Jerkovich would later hit a breakaway layup as she scored seven of the nine Angel points of the quarter. Emily Liguori was also helpful, getting the ball to her teammates.

"Jackie (Jerkovich) is a spark to our team and a pure outside shooter," said Liddy. "Emily (Liguori) is a great slasher and when these two play, you’re looking at our future."

The halos couldnt keep up with Pascack Valleys high-octane offense, turning the ball over twice. Alli Lombardi and Ely capitalized on the turnovers to put the Indians up 23-15 with 1:54 left in the half.

Pascack Valley closed out the second quarter with a 8-0 run, giving them a 27-15 halftime lead.

"We got tired, but we continued to play great defense on Rebecca Lynch and did what we had to do," said Bonito.

The Angels were inconsistent in their box-out assignments and once again Pascack Valley made them pay, as Ely knocked down two shots from behind the arc. deNicola responded with a three-pointer of her own and she finished with nine points.

"You have to box out and we did that for a good 27-28 minutes," said Liddy. "We couldn’t convert."

Besley exploded in the third quarter, erupting for nine points, as the freshman guard sank everything from jumpers to circus-shot layups. She finished the game with 14 points.

"I knew we had to score points and take it to the basket," said Besley. "We had a chance to win and I took that into consideration and tried my best."

"She was possessed," said Liddy. "This is the first game where she’s played up to that magnitude."

Bonito was solid and consistent as usual, cashing in with 12 points and Cathleen McGuiness chipped in with two.

Unfortunately for the Angels, the Indians set up multiple screens to free up the shooter.

Two Indians would drive towards the basket with the front player dribbling the ball, just before she attempted the layup. At the last moment she would dish it out to a teammate tailing her every move.

This offensive scheme proved to be unstoppable.

"We really had to work on offense and defense to fight through screens, but today they beat us with outside shooting," said Bonito. "We got a lot of inside opportunities and we played good defense. Both teams played well, they just came out on top."

The Indians were able to extend their lead and advance to the next round with the victory, but the Angels have a bright future ahead of them.

"For the most part we boxed out and everyone helped out," said Liguori. "We played up today and now are going to learn from this for the future when we play [other] good teams."
