CRESSKILL — In anticipation of tomorrow’s holiday, seniors and Girl Scouts spent a Saturday afternoon asking wounded soldiers to "be mine" this Valentine’s Day.
Girl Scout Troop 142 of Dumont visited the residents of Sunrise Assisted and Independent Living of Cresskill, 3 Tenakill Park East, on Feb. 2 for a Valentine making program designed to uplift the spirits of wounded soldiers.
"We’re working hand and glove, providing thoughtful Valentines for our troops," said Caroline Angelica, director of the Cresskill Sunrise Assisted and Independent Living.
The finished cards will then be delivered to the Bold Brave Courageous, a non-profit organization. Founded by Tenafly resident John Clemente, Sr., Bold Brave Courageous is composed of a group of volunteers who raise funds and supplies for soldiers who have fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Seated in the sunlit activity room, the seniors and Girl Scouts pasted stickers and beads onto pink-colored construction paper. Resident Anthony Maroldo, a World War II veteran, made one card that wished a "Happy Valentine’s Day to a brave marine."
Within an hour, Troop Leader Helen Belits said she counted a total of 40 cards.
"I was worried because we only had seven girls, but they’ve made a lot," said Belits, shooting a quick glance around the room. "They’re like little machines."
The residents said that they enjoyed fashioning the cards alongside the Girl Scouts, who had never before participated in a Cresskill Sunrise program. Belits said that she hopes that it will not be the last, either.
"This was great," said the troop leader. "A little more hands-on [for the girls]."
Sensing the need for a sugar break, Sunrise concierge Suzanne Doyle handed out a tray of chocolate chip cookies.
"Oh, look what you’re getting," said another resident, speaking to a Girl Scout at her table. "A just reward."
