Englewood lawmakers took a positive step forward when they passed a law that would put some restrictions on pay to play.
However, the law caps campaign contributions at $2,500 from attorneys, planners and engineers, but still allows developers the freedom to contribute endlessly.
Lawmakers recognized this self-created flaw in the system and Council President Ken Rosenzweig is pushing for making developers’ contributions public.
Although developers contributions can already be accessed through the state’s election information database, the plan to have the information ready if a developer submits an application is the right move, for now.
Ideally, Englewood should follow suit and adopt tougher campaign contributions, like several municipalities statewide, for developers and any other entity seeking a government contract
