'In Stitches' meetings set
The Englewood Public Library will host the next two meetings of "In Stitches," the new, highly successful knit and crochet group, Monday, May 5 and Thursday, May 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Library’s Mackay Room B. The program, which is being run by Reference Librarian Nicole Williams of Englewood, is free and open to the public.

Bishop to discuss two new books
Bishop Walter G. McKoy, D.D., Pastor of The Church of Jesus Christ (Apostolic) in Englewood, will discuss his two new books, "Be Empowered by His Promises and Provisions" and "Making Things Better Through the Transforming Power of Jesus Christ," Thursday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Englewood Public Library’s Mackay Room. He has a third book, titled "Making Things Better Through the Transforming Power of Jesus Christ: A Study Guide." A book signing will follow McKoy’s talk, which is free and open to the public.
McKoy preaches the Gospel in the West Indies, Canada, England, Africa, India and throughout the United States. His vision is to establish branch churches in the states he overseas. He plans to start an adult education learning center to aid minorities in achieving their GED and empower them with basic computer skills.

Author to discuss labor history
In celebration of "Labor History Month," author Les Leopold of Montclair will discuss his new book, "The Man Who Hated Work and Loved Labor: The Life and Times of Tony Mazzocchi," Wednesday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Englewood Public Library’s Mackay Room. A book signing will follow Leopold’s talk. The friends of the Englewood Public Library are funding the program, which is free and open to the public.
Mazzocchi (1926-2002) was a formidable labor organizer and longtime leader of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union. One of his milestones was the passage of the 1970s Occupational Safety and Health Act.
Leopold co-founded and currently directs two non-profit educational organizations: the Labor Institute and the Public Health Institute. He designs research and educational programs on occupational safety and health, the environment and economics. He is now helping to form an alliance between the United Steel Workers Union and the Sierra Club.

Women's book group to meet
"Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (2005)" by Lisa See will provide the topic for the next Women’s Book Group event Tuesday, May 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Englewood Library Mackay Room B at 31 Engle St.
The book takes place in 19th century China. A girl is paired with a "laotong," or "old same," in an emotional match that will last a lifetime.
Book copies can be obtained through Reference Librarian Charlene Taylor of the Englewood Library. A complimentary dinner of a salad, roll and water will be provided to attendees who reserve ahead at 201-424-4817, book group organizer Nancy Ferer’s cell phone.
The Women’s Book Group is co-sponsored by Women’s Rights Information Center’s Women’s History Library, Englewood, and the Englewood Public Library. New participants are always welcome from the community.

Spring poetry program set
"Janet & Friends" will present a spring poetry program, titled "Spring Folly," Tuesday, May 27 at 8 p.m. in the Englewood Public Library’s Mackay Room. Poet Janet A. Ullrich of Waldwick heads the group. The program is free and open to the public.
Featured poets include Phil Hermida of Wyckoff, Janet and Jean Ullrich of Waldwick, Dick Burnon of Dumont and Laurie Summer of Waldwick. An open mic reading by a variety of poets will follow the regular program.

Library seeks Hispanic authors
The Art Exhibition Committee of the Englewood Public Library is seeking artists and photographers for the "Hispanic Heritage Month" exhibit in October. The deadline for submitting entries is July 1.
Each prospective exhibitor should submit 10 slides or photos of his or her work, a short résumé/biography, a one-to-three paragraph artist statement and a show theme to Dick Burnon, Head of Adult Programming and Public Relations, Englewood Public Library, 31 Engle St., Englewood, NJ 07631.

Library week sale successful
To mark "National Library Week," the Friends of the Englewood Public Library recently held a two-day, successful bargain-priced Spring Used Book Sale at the Renaissance Office Center, which is next to the library at 15 Engle St. in Englewood.
The sale grossed $1,669. The proceeds will be used to benefit the library.
