Spring fair to raise money for library
Arts and crafts, live music, international food concessions and children’s rides mark the annual return of the Demarest Public Library Association’s Spring Fair at Demarest’s Duck Pond Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The rain date is Saturday, May 24.
Attendees of all ages will enjoy arts and crafts; live music in the Peace Gazebo; traditional Korean, Japanese and Indian food concessions; home-baked goods; canoe rides on the Duck Pond; children’s rides and games; and a 50/50 raffle.
Proceeds from the annual fundraiser go directly to the library. Last year’s fair proceeds helped complete the Library Association’s Barrier Free Construction fundraising project, which resulted in a new 674 square foot addition to the library, plus a new elevator that provides handicap accessibility to the building for the first time.
Arts and crafts exhibitors wishing to show at this year’s Spring Fair may apply by completing and submitting an application, which is available at www.demarestnj.net. Applications may also be picked up and/or dropped off at the library during regular business hours. Space is limited and will be filled on a strictly first come, first served basis. The deadline for applications is Friday, May 9.
The Demarest Public Library is located at 90 Hardenburgh Ave., Demarest, NJ 07627.

Library exhibits work of late artist
The Englewood Public Library is featuring the work of the late Englewood artist Lillian Slater in a retrospective exhibit during May. The theme of the exhibit, which is free and open to the public, is "Lillian Slater, 5/6/21-3/4/08, a Retrospective: Time Passed, Objects Present."
Her work may be viewed during normal library hours: Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will be closed Memorial Day, Monday, May 26.
There will be a reception for the family and friends of Slater, as well as art lovers, in celebration of her life and artwork Friday, May 9, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the main level of the library. The public is invited.
Slater, who passed away March 4 at the age of 86, loved archeology, particularly the colors and textures of stone. Most of her work presented has some scratching or etching. To create these, she used acrylic, glazes, sculptural fabrics, slate and marble dust to develop surface, texture and color. However, these are paintings, not sculpture.
