JCC gets new van to serve seniors
Charlie Klatskin, JCC founding member and former JCC president, and his wife, Lynne, recently gifted the Senior Adult Department of the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades with a brand new, handicapped accessible van. This van is now providing a seamless service, enabling the department to take people off a waiting list, expand the department’s catchment area and bring companionship and vital programming to more seniors than ever.
To express gratitude, the Senior Department and its many program participants held a reception for Charlie and Lynne at the JCC to thank them in person for their generosity.
The Senior Adult Department at the JCC offer hundreds of programs each year, door-to-door transportation for as little as $3 a day, hot kosher lunches, lectures covering current events, politics, medicine, art and more. The department also holds holiday and birthday celebrations, intergenerational activities, social opportunities, exercise and entertainment. There are specialized programs to meet the needs of all seniors, from active retirees to participants in the JCC Kaplen Adult Reach Center, an adult day care for people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

The department currently offers 65 weekly/monthly programs to meet the needs of more than 500 children, who are often excluded from vital educational and recreational opportunities simply because appropriate programming is not available to meet their special needs.
This year, the JCC will feature a special guest speaker at the Ladies Luncheon at 12:15 p.m. – health and nutrition guru Oz Garcia, who will discuss his new book, "Redesigning 50: The No Plastic Surgery Guide to 21st Century Age Defiance."
Following Garcia’s presentation, the JCC Classic will continue with a full venue of events, including a sold-out afternoon shotgun, women’s tennis tournaments, a million dollar shoot out, hole-in-one competitions, prizes, awards and a 50/50 raffle with a $20,000 first prize. The day also includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, a lavish cocktail reception and an auction, featuring hard-to-get items such as rare sports and theater tickets.
To date, proceeds from the Classic have provided summer camping experiences for children with cancer and other blood disorders, as well as children with autism; the chance for children with special needs to participate in our nursery school and summer camp; the opportunity for developmentally disabled children and teens to acquire valuable life skills to improve their daily lives; and the chance for people of all ages with special needs to participate in "Special Games for Special People," a fun-filled day of sports and camaraderie.
