See works from art school faculty
DEMAREST — The Mikhail Zakin Gallery at Art school at Old Church presents salon 561, an eclectic exhibition of works from faculty members of the Art School at Old Church. The exhibition will run through Oct. 17. A closing party with the artists will be held Oct. 17 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Salon 561 showcases works that are diverse in both medium and style. Oil and watercolor paintings, hand-pulled prints, drawings, ceramics, lamp-worked glass, jewelry and fiber are a few of the disciplines that will be on display. The Art School faculty includes distinguished artists from Bergen County, Rockland County, New York City and beyond.

Little naturalists program set for kids
TENAFLY — Toddlers 2 1/2 to 3 years old with a special adult will explore the natural world with Tenafly Nature Center educator, Denise Kuehner. Every week will feature a different topic as each adult guides their child through discovery stations, songs, pretend and outside journeys.
The program will be held Oct. 16, 23 and 30 from 1 to 2 p.m. and is under cover if raining, but dress for the weather. No strollers or siblings are permitted.
Fees are per child/adult pair. The series fee is $40 for members and $60 for nonmembers; individual sessions are $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers. For each additional family member, the series is $20 for members and $30 for nonmembers; individual sessions are $8 for members and $10 for nonmembers.

Kids can explores nature in afternoon
TENAFLY — Participants will have fun exploring the Tenafly Nature Center while learning about the plants and animals that inhabit our natural world in an after-school series from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m.
Pre-k and kindergarten children can explore Tuesdays, Oct. 14, 21 and 28. First- through fifth-graders can explore Thursdays, Oct. 16, 23 and 30.
Students should dress in sturdy, close-toed footwear. Topics include turkeys, pumpkins, birds of prey and raccoons. The program is held rain or shine at the center, 313 Hudson Ave. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.
The series fee is $40 for members and $60 for nonmembers. For individual sessions, the fee is $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers.

‘Black and White’ art show scheduled
ENGLEWOOD — The Mark Gallery is presenting its group show entitled "Black and White."
The exhibition features a diverse collection of black and white artwork in a variety of media, including painting, work on paper, sculpture, photography and ceramics.
By leaving color behind, these artists have found a new and unique artistic language.

Palisades Folk Dancers schedule
TENAFLY — The Palisades Folk Dancers continues its fall 2008 session Oct. 19, Nov. 2 and 16 and Dec. 7.
The Palisades Folk Dancers teaches international folk dance at all levels. Events are held from 3 to 5:30 p.m. most first and third Sundays of the month at the Church of the Atonement, Engle Street at Highwood Avenue in Tenafly.
Suggested donation is $9 for basic, $11 for guest teachers and $12 for live music. No experience, partner or enrollment is needed. Experienced local members teach and review. Refreshments are provided. Casual dress and soft-sole shoes are acceptable.

Project Literacy to sponsor ESL training
HACKENSACK – To answer the growing need of people in our area to learn English, Project Literacy of Bergen County will sponsor a series of training sessions for volunteers willing to tutor adults in speaking and understanding basic English. Volunteers do not require knowledge of a foreign language to take part.
The sessions will take place Thursdays, Oct. 16, 23, 30 and Nov. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bergen Community College Ciarco Learning Center, 355 Main St., Hackensack in Community Meeting Room 103. Free and ample parking is available behind the center.
A fee of $15 is requested for books and materials. Upon completion of the training, the volunteer will be matched with an adult learner and then meet for weekly tutoring sessions.

Family Campfire program scheduled
TENAFLY — Learn about the seasonal changes, play games, use your senses and discover that the night is not really as scary as it seems at the Tenafly Nature Center, 313 Hudson Avenue.
The family camfires will be held Saturday, Nov. 1 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 14 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
If the weather is inclement the fireplace in the pavilion will be used or the program will be indoors.
The program is intended for adults and families with children 5 years and older. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. The cost is $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers.

Apple cider making set for residents
TENAFLY — Help make apple cider using a cider press, while learning about the history of apple cultivation and cider making. Participants must bring three apples per person.
The program will be held Sundays, Oct. 12 and Nov. 2 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. or 2 to 3 p.m.
It will be held rain or shine at the Tenafly Nature Center, 313 Hudson Ave. Pre-registration is requested. Sessions are free for members and children under 2 and $5 for nonmembers.

Operation Smile is in need of cellphones
CRESSKILL — The Cresskill Woman’s Club is collecting used cellphones for Operation Smile throughout the year until 2009.
Operation Smile currently supports missions to 25 countries where teams of surgeons perform operations on children with facial deformities.
The collection points are Cresskill Borough Hall, Cresskill Public Library, Hudson City Bank, Benjamin Bros. and Dumont Public Library.

Saturday workshops for gifted children
GLEN ROCK — The Gifted Child Society is now planning for its fall 2008 Saturday workshops. The fall brochure will be ready for mailing around Labor Day. The 10-session program, with classes designed specifically for gifted children, will start Oct. 4 and finish Dec. 13.
The workshop program consists of about 65 55-minute classes for eligible children age four through eighth graders. Three-year-old children do not need to meet formal eligibility requirements, but older children do.
Some of the courses offered in the fall program include the young architect, amigos en Español, microbiology, the stock market game, Saturday workshop players and debating.
All Saturday workshop classes are designed to challenge the special learning needs and styles of gifted children.

Sculpture exhibit set for October
CLOSTER — From Oct. 5 to 26, 17 members of the Sculptor Affiliates group of the Art Center of Northern New Jersey are exhibiting their latest artwork at the Belskie Museum, 280 High St. in Closter.
The sculptures vary from light and airy wire mesh objects and colorful soft wool "habitats" to majestic stone and wood creations. Several artists use an abundance of found objects in creative and even charming ways. The variation in styles and materials has been described as "exciting, frequently unexpected, colorful and cutting edge."
Three special events are scheduled during this exhibition:
 Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. — "The Many Faces of Public Sculpture", a lecture by Professor Harriet Senie of CUNY
 Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. — Movie night at the Closter Public Library, located adjacent to the Belskie Museum. Documentary about William Kentridge, one of the most important names in South African contemporary art.
 Oct. 25 at 1:30 p.m. — Free workshop "Homage to Louise Nevelson," conducted by Herrat Sommerhoff, sculptor/painter, working primarily with found materials.
The gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m., other days by appointment.

Join in ‘Naturally Journaling’ program
TENAFLY — Participants 10-14 years old will be led through a series of observation and drawing exercises to help them describe what they see with words and drawings. Students should bring sketchbooks or journals and favorite drawing materials; additional drawing materials will be available.
Dress appropriately for weather and walking. The program is held rain or shine. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. The series fee is $30 for members and $45 for nonmembers. Individual sessions are $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers.
The program will be held Sundays, Oct. 19, May 3 and June 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Tenafly Nature Ceneter, 313 Hudson Ave.

Draw seasons with center’s workshop
TENAFLY — In this series of workshops, adults 18 and older will look at the changing views of nature through the seasons and draw those changes.
Participants will experience a silent walk along one of the center’s trails focusing on their surroundings until an ideal location for the art session is found. Students should bring paper or sketchbooks and pencils, watercolor or pastels. The center will also provide some materials. Dress appropriately for weather and walking.
The program is held rain or shine and pre-registration is requested. The series is $40 for members and $60 for nonmembers. Individual sessions are $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers. The sessions will be held Sundays, Oct. 26, Dec. 14, April 26 and July 12 from 2 to 4 p.m.
