Oct. 21
Learn to knit with the woman’s club
CRESSKILL — The Cresskill Woman’s Club will meet Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cresskill High School.
Teacher Mary Ricco will lead a "learn to knit" class. Refreshments are always served. For more information, call Beat at 201-568-3604.

Oct. 22
Calling all teachers for training event
TENAFLY — The Tenafly Nature Center is now a registered Professional Development Provider. It will be offering a Project WILD Teacher Training Workshop for teachers of all grade levels Wednesday, Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Participants will learn effective, hands-on environmental and wildlife-related activities for the classroom and schoolyard. Teachers will receive the award-winning Project WILD Activity Guide and six hours of professional development credit.
The workshop fee is $25 and pre-registration before Oct. 20 is required.

Luncheon and fashion show
TENAFLY — The Woman’s Club of Tenafly will hold its Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show at noon Wednesday, Oct. 22 at the Clinton Inn, Dean Drive, Tenafly.
Together with co-chairmen Audrey Vion and Roddy Squire, Pat Harwick, Adriene Kiel, Evelyn Comer, Moria Pearson, Ann Hickey, Ann Ciardiello, Phyliss Raulerson, Joyce Zeiller and Sara Van Horne will model the latest in fashions from Dress Barn in Westwood.
The club will use the proceeds to support educational and community projects. Last year the club supported the Bergen County Summer Camp Fund, blankets to Afghanistan for Wounded Soldiers, the Center for Food Action, Shelter our Sisters, Englewood Hospital Hospice, the Tenafly Nature Center, Holiday Wish Tree and the Family Assistance Center at the Teaneck Armory.
The club has also supported the River Keeper Education Program that provides a special day of learning about the environment for local children and also coordinates the UNICEF program in Tenafly.

‘Wine and career enlightenment’
ENGLEWOOD — "Wine and Career Enlightenment" will be presented by Sandra Ruggles at the Singles Connection Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Englewood.
Join the Singles Connection and enjoy an introduction to the newest wines sweeping the area and firsthand tips on finding that second career choice. With today’s economy, all can benefit from social and professional choices.
After 20 years as a professional singer, Ruggles developed a new career in the food and beverage business with her other talents. During the time of her operatic pursuits, she was chef at a country club, waited tables, made desserts for restaurants, did office work and bartended. She then came to New York and sang at Lincoln Center performing with New York City Opera for 16 years and the Metropolitan Opera for four years.
After completing her goals, she started a new career as a wine specialist and sales person for the fine wines division of Fedway, Washington Selections.
The Singles Connection also sponsors its first trip Saturday Nov. 1, to Storm King Art Center leaving the church at 10:45 a.m.
The center is a unique sculpture park located an hour north of the George Washington Bridge. The cost of $10 includes a-guided tram tour. Car transportation, gas and tolls, will be shared by the participants.

Beefsteak dinner for democrats set
OLD TAPPAN — The Old Tappan Democratic Party has scheduled a Beefsteak Dinner Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., at the Colonial Manor, 137 Orangeburg Road, in Old Tappan.
The price is $50 for all you can eat salad, beefsteak, fries, garlic bread, beer, soda, coffee and dessert. A disc jockey will provide music for dancing and entertainment.
Special guests include Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney; Congressional candidate for New Jersey 5th District, Dennis Shulman; and Old Tappan Democratic Council candidates Donna Mallinger and Briana McAlpine.

Residents can see ‘State by State’ film
TENAFLY — "Out of the Book" films generate conversation. They capture attention and engage imaginations by presenting authors as charismatic, compelling personalities through an artful combination of interviews, expert commentary, intriguing excerpts, original music and striking cinematography.
This 35-minute feature stars many of the book’s most prominent contributors and will be screened in upwards of 100 cities and towns around America as the 2008 election approaches, serving as a catalyst for powerful conversation and personal connection in communities large and small.
The program, held rain or shine, is intended for people 18 and older and will be held Oct. 23 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Pre-registration is not required, but requested. The program is free.

Computer classes available for adults
TENAFLY — The Computer Learning Center for Adults +40 at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades, 411 East Clinton Ave., Tenafly, is taking registration for computer courses.
The fall session begins Oct. 23 offering 10 courses in basic and advanced computer skills. Receive 10 percent off when you register by Oct. 8.
The fall classes are:
 Computer fundamentals — A basic course that helps you become comfortable with computers. 
Introduction to computers — Using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Works, gain an overview of creating, formatting, editing and printing documents, and learn how to use Clip Art, and basic database concepts and the Internet and e-mail.}
 Advanced introduction to computer — Expands on the topics presented in the introductory course and adds creating folders and shortcuts.
 Microsoft Word 2003 — Teaches how to format, enhance, delete, edit, print and save documents. 
Cruising the Internet — Utilizing AOL and Internet Explorer, learn the intricacies of e-mail. Discover how to navigate the World Wide Web using search engines and keywords, bulletin boards and chat rooms.
 Digital photo wonders — Learn how to capture images in digital format. 
File management — An efficient, fast and easy method for organizing your computer files, which can contain hundreds of documents. 
How to protect and maintain computers — Solve and repair common problems.
Practice time is free with the course. Practice the material that has been presented in the various courses. Coaches will be on hand to assist participants.
