Aug. 28
Come to freshman orientation
DEMAREST — Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest has announced that its annual freshman orientation will be conducted Thursday, Aug. 28 beginning at noon in the high school’s south gym.
Principal Dr. Bruce Sabatini and other administrators will greet students and welcome them to the high school. Freshmen will receive student handbooks and their 2008-2009 academic schedules. They will also receive a tour of the building.
The peer mentors, under the advisorship of Ms. Laura Schwartzapfel, Ms. Mary Anne Dougherty, and Ms. Peggy Rizzo will coordinate the program. Transfer students to Northern Valley Demarest for 2008-2009 have also been invited to attend this program.

Aug. 29-Sept. 1
Labor Day weekend events and 5K run
CLOSTER — The Closter Recreation Commission announces its 48th annual Labor Day weekend activities. All activities will take place at Veterans Memorial Park located on Harrington Avenue in Closter.
Friday, Aug. 29 is the annual Closter Coaches Association Picnic and Softball game. All Closter Coaches Association members and their families are welcome at the picnic, which begins at 7 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 30 is the 11th Annual Four-Person Volleyball Tournament at 11 a.m. Registration is $20 per team. For more information, e-mail closterrecjim@aol.com.
Sunday, Aug. 31 is the Jim O’Halloran Kid’s Fun Run at 9:30 a.m. The one-mile fun run is open to children ages 12 and under. Registration opens at 9 a.m. and the fee is $1.
The Dom Mircovich Memorial 5K Run begins at 10 a.m. Registration for the 27th annual 5K will open at 9 a.m., and the race day fee is $15. Pre-registration is $10 and the forms are at Borough Hall and Garden State Dairy. A form can also be found online at closterboro.com.
The Dom Mircovich 5K is sponsored by Core Gym in Closter and the Northern Valley Suburbanite.
The third Annual "Guns and Hoses" Softball Game with the Closter Police vs. Closter Fire Department/Ambulance Corp will begin at 12:15 p.m., immediately following the 5K run. The game will be played on the George Potterton Little League Field.
The Closter Lions Antique Car Show will be from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. at Tenakill School (on the High Street side).
The 48th annual Labor Day festivities will be held Monday, Sept. 1. The rain date is Sunday, Sept. 7. Events include a magic show at 1 p.m., the "Who’s Your Daddy" rock band at 1:15 p.m., children’s field races at 1:50 p.m., recreation awards at 2:30 p.m., "The Willies" rock band at 4 p.m., the Waldwick Band concert at 7 p.m. and fireworks after dark.
There will be food, refreshments, games and rides all day. This year there will be games and competitions for older children including a soccer shoot out, a basketball free throw contest and a pie throwing booth.

Aug. 31
Adopt a pet during labor day weekend
DUMONT — The Save the Animals Rescue Team is offering a Labor Day Pet Adoption Sunday, Aug. 31 from noon to 4 p.m. The event will take place at the Pet Valu in the Stop & Shop shopping center in Dumont.
Adopters will received a free bag of food, free toys and a free blanket. There are many homeless animals available.

Sept. 2
Writers’ Group sets fall schedule
CRESSKILL — The Writers’ Group will launch its fall season the day after Labor Day, Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 8 p.m. The group meets at the Cresskill Congregational Church, 85 Union Ave., alongside the Cresskill Borough Hall and opposite King’s supermarket.
The Writers’ Group offers an informal "workshop in progress" for all those interested throughout Bergen County and surrounding areas. All attending will have the opportunity to read and discuss their poems, as well as short stories, essays or parts of longer projects (such as novels or memoirs) or just to listen to others.
The programs are offered without charge.
The group normally meets the first Tuesday of the month. However, because of various scheduling conflicts, it will hold a combined October-November meeting Tuesday, Oct. 28, and return to the regular first-Tuesday schedule in December.

Sept. 3
Caregiver’s support group meeting set
ROCKLEIGH — A caregiver’s support group for those caring for a relative or friend who is physically frail or suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease will be held Wednesday, Sept. 3 from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Gallen Adult Day Health Care Center at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh.
Informative topics will be discussed in a supportive atmosphere. The group is free and open to the public.

Sept. 5
Garden club gears up for fall season
DEMAREST — After a summer of planning, the Demarest Garden Club will hold its first monthly public meeting of the new gardening year Friday, Sept. 5 at 12:30 p.m. in the United Methodist Church at 109 Hardenburgh Ave., Demarest.
A program entitled "Dahlias — 14 different categories and 80,000 varieties" by dahlia expert Fred Carl will follow the business meeting. All gardeners interested in the program or in joining the club are welcome to attend.
Other club "fun" events scheduled for September include an Heirloom Tomato tasting party; sale of National Garden Club’s Vision of Beauty calendars presenting latest floral design arrangements; and, if time permits, a Horticulture Workshop making "engraved" pavers. Special events are open only to members and invited guests.
Activities at Davies Arboretum, a civic project run by the club and community volunteers and donors since 1977 on Borough-owned Green Acres lands at 49 Anderson Ave., Demarest continue Tuesday mornings until Oct. 15.
All volunteers are welcome. Of special interest this year is the creation of "Ed’s Garden Railroad," donated and installed by the GRRNJJ (Garden Railroaders of Northern New Jersey) and Lamp Family of Norwood. The enclosing wall is built, topography is being installed, and a dog bone layout of two-G gauge track loops one vertical foot apart is marked.
Installation of weatherproof tracks, a solar collector to power the trains, and miniature plants and buildings will be complete the project. Model trains owned by the garden club will eventually run according to a posted schedule or by special request.

Residents can go to Bavaro book signing
NORTHVALE — Mark Bavaro will be signing copies of his book at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5 at Books and Greetings, 271 Livingston St. in Northvale.
Bavaro played college football at Notre Dame, graduated in 1985, and was drafted by the Giants where he stayed through the 1990 season and played for Bill Parcells, alongside Phil Simms and Lawrence Taylor. He also played with the Cleveland Browns and the Philadelphia Eagles.
He was selected for the Pro Bowl in 1986 and 1987 and was a pivotal member of the New York Giants during their Super Bowl XXI and XXV wins. He lives in Massachusetts.

Sept. 6
Nature center sets family night hike
TENAFLY — The Nature Center, 313 Hudson Ave. in Tenafly, is hosting a Family Night Hike Saturday, Sept. 6 from 8 to 9 p.m.
Venture on a walk through the woods at night while you play games, use your senses and discover that the night is not as scary as it seems.
In case of inclement weather, the program will be rescheduled. The program is intended for adults and families with children 5 years and older.
Space is limited and pre-registration is required. The cost is $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers.

Sept. 7
9/11 memorial service to remember victims
ENGLEWOOD — Englewood Mayor Michael Wildes will host a seventh anniversary 9/11 memorial service on the front lawn of the Englewood Public Library Sunday, Sept. 7 at 9 a.m.
It will take place on the lawn near the memorial garden established in 2004 containing engraved stones honoring each of the eight victims from the community who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
Last year, a park bench donated by the Andrew Kim Foundation was dedicated to the memory of Andrew Kim and others in the community who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
City council members, fire, police and Englewood emergency service personnel who responded to ground zero, Englewood Volunteer Ambulance Corps, members of victims’ families, local clergy and state and county officials will join in the event.

Thurnauer School open house set
TENAFLY — The Thurnauer School of Music will host an open house with musical events for babies, children and adults from 9:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7 at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades, 411 East Clinton Ave. in Tenafly.
Free sample classes are scheduled from 9:15 to 11 a.m. including "Baby Rhythms" for babies ages 3-12 months; "Musical Troubadours" for children ages 13-35 months; "Music and Movement" for children ages 3-4 years; and a second "Music and Movement" class for children ages 5-6.
At 12:30 p.m. current music school students will perform a Showcase Recital for music lovers of any age, followed by a "Meet the Instrument" reception where students and faculty demonstrate their instruments and answer questions. Refreshments will be served.
This event is free and open to the public. Call the music school to reserve a spot in the sample classes. No reservations are required for the recital or reception.
