NEWS For the past month, men with “security” written on their shirts have been asking certain customers to not park in 17 spots in the ShopRite parking lot bordering McDonald’s in Englewood. Only customers of the shopping plaza are being allowed to park in the privately owned lot. • A plan to investigate contamination on the former Closter Dock Service Center site on Closter Dock Road has been approved by the Department of Environmental Protection. The approved plan calls for additional groundwater testing to confirm the contaminants are limited to the site and determine whether the contamination is naturally biodegrading. • Edward H. Bryan School in Cresskill held the school’s 100th anniversary celebration April 29. Wielding props and sporting “100 years of Bryan School priceless” tees, students shared in song, memories and surprises with the 750-member audience. • Haworth resident Lisa Boyd, 43, was sentenced to a year in jail for embezzling more than $300,000 from a Tenafly landscaping company. She was also handed five years probation and restitution in the amount of $137,580.95 to former employer Peter Beucler of Beucler Tree Services, according to court records. • With a lost lawsuit and deficiency deadline looming near, Northvale agreed to pay $332,000 in last year’s bills to its former environmental engineer. Council members voted unanimously April 29 to pay Reminton and Vernick approximately $307,000 for cleanup costs at the Deluxe Dry Cleaners site and $25,000 for grant-writing services. • An 8-year-old Teaneck resident underwent emergency surgery April 27 after being attacked by two pit bulls owned by an Englewood resident. Abaidullah Sikander suffered multiple bites to his head, arm and knee after the dogs ran into the backyard of his home and attacked him. • Democratic Rep. Frank Pallone has endorsed Dennis Shulman for Congress. Shulman, a Demarest resident and fellow democrat, is running for Congress in New Jersey’s 5th Congressional District. He has lived in the district for 25 years. • A committee has been formed at Northern Valley Regional High School to explore the possibility of transitioning to a 1:1 student to computer ratio. Currently the district has a 1.5:1 student to computer ratio. The 1:1 system, which is used at Pascack Valley Regional High School, could provide each student with an individual laptop to use in classes. • The company deterring crime and preventing certain customers from parking in the ShopRite lot in Englewood isn’t licensed to provide security, a state police representative said last week. A May 1 inquiry by the Private Detective Unit of the New Jersey State Police resulted in the finding that the company and the men are not certified to be labeled as “security” or perform the duties of security officers. • A four-year mentorship program that would culminate in a senior year internship for the class of 2012 is in the works at Northern Valley Regional High School. School officials are planning to pair administrators and teachers with 10 students each, starting freshman year for the class of 2012. The mentors would help guide students toward careers to explore during their senior year internship. • Englewood police arrested Tenafly’s Gerald Taufield, 36, April 29 for allegedly storing dozens of antique weapons, some stolen, in a unit at Englewood’s Lackland Storage. • According to Super Value Oil President Michael Dattilo, the closing on the abandoned Super Value site in Closter is anticipated within weeks. Dattilo also said the buyer, Daibes Enterprises, will be responsible for the required cleanup on site. • Called the “Knitwits,” a group of knitters living at Sunrise Assisted Living Center in Cresskill fashion hats, afghans and lap blankets for Project Linus. The group issued a fifth batch of handmade goods May 2 to the non-profit volunteer organization, which benefits seriously ill, traumatized or needy children. • Northern Valley Demarest High School students listened to a young Bergen County Jail inmate talk about his life of defiance and drug abuse April 28. Arrested a year after his high school graduation, the Hillsdale native was sentenced to eight years of jail at 18 years old, putting an end to record deals and a promising music career. • The Dwight Morrow Academies @ Englewood held its sixth annual Diversity Day May 2 where everyone on campus celebrates the differences each person has and works together to develop an understanding and tolerance of them. • Norwood and the Township of Washington have decided to fight a lawsuit filed in February by Martin O’Shea, an open government advocate and retired newspaper reporter, and his associate, John Paff, for not producing documents requested under the Open Public Records Act (OPRA). Eight other towns have agreed to pay out about $718 apiece to cover O’Shea’s and Paff’s legal fees. • More than 25 students from Dwight Morrow High School and the Academies @ Englewood sat down to listen to state prison inmates “Benjamin” and “Juan” tell stories of how gang life led them to no life. • Daniel Fitzpatrick, 61, was hired as Englewood’s new full-time city manager April 28. Although he’ll officially start July 7, city officials and residents will start seeing the new face of management in City Hall and throughout various neighborhoods as he aims to acclimate to his new surroundings. • Officials at the Englewood on the Palisades Charter School don’t have many kind words for the state budget that leaves their state aid flat. Besides the Englewood school, nine other charter schools are not likely to receive any additional funding in the state’s preliminary budget for Fiscal Year 2009, which starts July 1. • Closter resident Eleanor Enerson underwent a non-surgical procedure to close a hole in her heart. Dr. Thomas Cocke, a Westwood-based cardiologist used small discs of fabric to close the hole, technology that came on the market about five years ago. Cocke has performed approximately 100 of these procedures. • It has been 65 years since the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, an effort by the civilians in the ghetto and the resistance organizations in the area to end the deportations of Poland’s Jewish population by the Nazis. Area residents, including Holocaust survivor Evelyn Ripp of Tenafly, gathered at Temple Sholom in River Edge May 1 to remember what happened and to light candles for the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust. • A near-fatal stabbing at a popular downtown eatery landed an Englewood man in the hospital and a New York man in jail. Police arrested Eric Rodriguez, 28, of Fresh Meadows, N.Y., charging him with attempted murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, terroristic threats and criminal mischief. Police said that Rodriguez stabbed a 32-year-old Englewood man after a fight inside the Sangria-Sake restaurant spilled onto the street April 20.
