NEWS The Haworth Public School’s Superintendent David Eichenholtz resigned less than a week after parents protested the principal’s non-renewed contract. Eichenholtz had not recommended to the school board the renewal of Principal Norberto Diaz’s contract, which expires June 30. • Englewood council members recently passed a law that would allow city financiers to borrow $9.5 million to buy land and construct roads off Route 4. Although the city will front the money by taking out a loan, property owners who directly benefit from the new traffic and easier highway access will pay the final tab, officials said. • The Red and Tan bus No. 14 line is being consolidated with the No. 84 bus, affecting some of the routes servicing Closter. The service of the No. 14 bus, which runs from the George Washington Bridge terminal to Harrington Park with stops along Knickerbocker Road, is stopping May 19. Riders will have to pick up the No. 84 bus, which stops in downtown Closter. • After reviewing Cresskill’s failed school budget, special consultant Joseph Martin indicated that the school district may have to rethink budget items including the purchase of equipment and supplies, salary breakage among teachers, a middle school gym teacher hire and a custodial hire. • Northvale’s Borough Council may siphon as much as $50,000 from the defeated Northvale Public Schools’ budget, despite reservations from school officials. Local leaders have to trim the $8 million school budget, which failed April 15 by more than 100 votes. • Tenafly is considering a special improvement district (SID) plan in its downtown. During a special public meeting, Mark Lohbauer from the JGSC Group, LLC, presented the findings and recommendations of a feasibility study. • Harrington Park held a concert honoring Barbara Budinich, which raised more than $2,500 for the Barbara Budinich Scholarship Fund. Budinich, who died Jan. 6, was a longtime councilwoman and a member of the Harrington Park Volunteer Ambulance Corps. • Ellen Silberman of Tenafly hosted a pocketbook party with friends as part of Supplies 4 Success. The cause benefits high school girls from Englewood’s Dwight Morrow who get designer bags for job interviews. In addition, money goes to buy backpacks and school supplied for other students in need. • The GO GREEN! environmental club of the Academy of Holy Angels in Demarest helped organize an electronics recycling drive to give residents a way to dispose of unwanted electronics responsibly. The members of the club had help from GreenFaith, an interfaith organization committed to helping the environment. • Residents honored Israel’s 60th birthday with an outdoor festival and concert at Englewood’s bergenPAC. The performers hailed from Israel and so did many of the attendees. • Norwood residents worry about the rising cost of property taxes and that the increases are forcing people who can’t afford their taxes out of the neighborhood. Much of the blame was placed on the school system, which accounts for roughly 65 percent of the local property tax bill. • A forum was recently held at the Englewood Public Library intended to promote community awareness of the challenges faced by immigrants in America. The forum was a way to start the conversation about the complex issue of immigration and how to address the needs of immigrants in the community. • Lifelong Closter resident Leo Liddy, who died last fall after devoting years of his life to coaching Little League Baseball, will have a ball field at Memorial Park named after him. • The Tenafly Rotary Club teamed with the Rotary Interactive Club of Tenafly High School and Pedals for Progress to collect unwanted bicycles to be shipped to third world countries. • Norwood officials are demanding a written explanation of why a quiet zone is not possible from train company CSX. Residents have voiced concerns about the noise the freight train creates by blowing its whistle when traveling through the community. • Special needs children braved roller coasters and carted away their plush prizes at a Cresskill carnival. The Italian-American service organization known as UNICO sponsored the carnival for more than 45 Pascack Valley children with special needs. • Old Tappan officials heard a presentation about the emergency notification service offered by Citizen Communication Center, called C3. Currently the Borough has an arrangement with the county, which is switching to C3 from Swift Reach, which officials said wasn’t working properly. • Tenafly resident Flora Perskie runs a collage crafts class for women and children who have been victims of domestic violence. She received an award from the organization Shelter Our Sisters for her volunteer work. • Two 10-year-old Closter residents have founded Get Ready for Environmental Education Now! (GREEN!) to educate their peers at Hillside Elementary School about preserving the environment. They hope to convince the Board of Education to enforce laws prohibiting parents from leaving their cars running while they wait for their children after school, among other environmental projects. • A Fort Lee church is seeking a new home on Englewood’s East Hill. Church officials presented the city’s Planning Board with the first drawings of a 660-seat church to be built on a wooded lot off Woodland Avenue. • Englewood residents celebrated their town together during the city’s annual Residents Day. Those involved were able to mingle with neighbors, enjoy food and depart with gift bags filled with items from local businesses. •

HELPING YOUNG GIRLS SUCCEED

Local socialites turned philanthropists Ellen Silberman and Nikki Rosen collect bags for their charity Supplies 4 Success. A pocketbook party held last week at Silberman’s home raised more than 100 purses for needy high school girls and $3,000 that will be used to purchase backpacks and school supplies for younger students in our area.
